Rewind, Repeat - 'DemiGod' by Siobhán Linnane
Exploring Siobhán Linnane's debut project "DemiGod" one year after its release on Saturday, November 30, 2019.
Texas-based artist Siobhán Linnane kicked off their debut project DemiGod one year ago—a multidimensional, alternative pop record that explores Siobhán’s various moods and identities.
Siobhán premiered the project with two lead singles: “Energy,” an unidentifiable, energetic, boastful track that highlights Siobhán’s distinct energy and their different feelings and thoughts over identity and people questioning their energy. “Fomo,” a daydream pop sequence that zones in on Siobhán’s daily morning routines and micro mentions on work, self care, and paranoia. These tracks both have very distinct personalities and functioned as very effective introductions into the dimension of DemiGod—each track functions as their own distinct personality split from Siobhán that explore different moods, feelings, and perspectives this higher ‘demigod’ figure.
“Coqui” is an instrumental introduction that leads the listener in with multi-instrumentals that pop in various ways. Synths spread across the track where random whistles and filtered drums and knocks kick in throughout. The term “coquere” in Latin translates to cook, which I interpreted as Siobhán’s demonstration to cook up a hybrid dream pop instrumental to capture the multidimensional nature of DemiGod.
“Like a Star” is an atmospheric, spacey track where Siobhán explores their wishes of stardom and their work determination to achieve this position in the limelight. “Working real hard / Gotta keep creating if I wanna be a star.” They express the many ways their lifestyle shines out others with their creativity and work flow—mesmerizing over the many lights they fantasize of exposure to fame and glory. “Born with a destiny, I got the green light (yeah) / I know I’ll be alright, I’m sure the way like a flashlight.” Siobhán states their access to their destiny for fame, paving the way for their future success in their music journey that awaits them.
“Made by Design” is what I would consider Siobhán’s ‘magnum opus’ track on the project, also the longest track that highlights operatic introduction into an alternative space where they identify “these thoughts are not mine… I was made by design.” The listener can hear birds chirping and natural sound that fade into 808s rocking which transition to filtered drums with a repetitive electric guitar sample. Siobhan in the beginning focuses on mentions of sobriety and anxiety, engaging with tapping into thoughts of a higher power’s creation of them and their thoughts surrounding this. The transition is signaled by Siobhán’s echoed laugh where they express thoughts on power and position with boastful on their design and their creator. “Cause I’m in love with thy, and my anatomy’s designer / I’m the fine china and nobody’s finer…Divine feminine, Too pretty to touch / Eyes hypnotic like Medusa, Turn these n***** to dust (mwah).” Siobhán’s boastful nature towards the second half of the track indicates the different feelings and perspective of a version of them, showing their highest ego.
“Egos” explores Siobhán’s hypnotic expression of their “love with the ego.” They discuss their different encounters with particular individuals, being over their demands and highlighting their lover obsession with the ‘ego.’ Expressions of paranoia of being inside your own head is echoed throughout the track, where Siobhán states their thought of someone being in their head as well as them being inside their own. This is not only mirrored through the repetition of lyrics, but also the hypnotic instrumental banging back and forth to the listener. This lets the listener become more aware of their own love obsessions and ego-infested thoughts. “I Want More” closes the project with Siobhán fantasizing and demanding more in their life. “Take a yearly trip to Greece, Cause I’m making Feta cheese.” They express these high lifestyle luxuries and demand more in their life, sounding like a chant that is speaking this dream of Siobhán’s into existence to fit the fulfillment of all their personalities.
I listen to this project almost every day, with my repetitive habits of listening to “Fomo” because of the dream-like, bedroom pop style that’s a pretty chill track to listen to on the daily. This project was a great introduction into Siobhán’s style, but also feel it doesn’t define them due to its diverse, multi-dimensional nature. DemiGod definitely holds up for Siobhán and their music journey, and excited to see where they take their next project due to the style and aesthetic of their latest single “Ask4.” My favorite tracks off the project are “Fomo,” “Energy,” “Made By Design,” and “Egos.”
